Prepaid Expense

A prepaid expense is a payment made in advance for goods or services that will benefit future accounting periods. Examples include prepaid rent, insurance, software subscriptions, or annual maintenance contracts. Initially it is recorded as an asset and then gradually charged as an expense over the period of benefit.
