Zero-Coupon Bond

A zero-coupon bond is a bond that does not pay regular interest during its life. Instead, it is issued at a discount to its face value and repaid at full face value on maturity, with the difference representing the investor’s return. Accounting for such bonds requires proper recognition of interest over time even though no periodic cash coupon is paid.
