Impairment Loss

An impairment loss arises when the carrying value of an asset becomes higher than the amount that can be recovered from it through use or sale. This usually happens when an asset is damaged, becomes obsolete, performs poorly, or loses market value significantly. In accounting, the asset is written down and the loss is recognized in the profit and loss statement.
